About Shucks · Est. 2006

The world’s finest lobster begins with trust and ends with taste.

At Shucks, we believe there are only two things that truly matter when it comes to exceptional seafood: taste and trust. Taste is what people remember. Trust is what brings them back.

The finest lobster in the world should deliver an unforgettable experience. But equally important, people deserve to know where their seafood comes from, who harvested it, and that it was sourced responsibly from one of the most sustainable fisheries on the planet.

Today’s chefs, retailers, distributors, and consumers want more than a great product. They want transparency. They want traceability. They want confidence that the people behind the product care as much about the future of the industry as they do about the quality of what’s on the plate.

So do we. That’s why everything we do begins with trust and ends with taste.

Built From the Ground Up

Not from a boardroom.
From the ground up.

My name is John Leavitt, and I’ve spent nearly two decades learning every aspect of Maine’s lobster industry. I’ve worked as a delivery driver. I’ve picked lobster meat. I’ve packed orders. I’ve loaded shipments. I’ve worked the processing floor. I’ve hauled traps as a sternman aboard Maine lobster boats.

Every role taught me something different.

The boats

Taught me respect for the resource.

The processing floor

Taught me the importance of precision, food safety, and quality.

The customers

Taught me the value of trust.

Along the way, I was fortunate to learn from some of the most respected people in the lobster industry — mentors who shared their knowledge, experience, and passion, and shaped the way I think about leadership, quality, customer relationships, and the future of Maine lobster. Those lessons, and the people who taught them, continue to influence how we operate Shucks today.

Over time, those experiences led me to become Vice President of Sales for one of the largest lobster companies in the world — a global perspective on the seafood business, and on the opportunity to do things differently.

I had a vision: a company that combined world-class quality, consistency, innovation, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to Maine lobster.

Today, that vision is Shucks. And I couldn’t be more excited to serve as Owner and CEO as we continue building on a legacy that began in 2006.

Continuing a Maine Lobster Legacy

No shortcuts. No compromises.

The Shucks story began in 2006 with a simple belief: Maine lobster deserves to be treated with the utmost care and respect from the moment it leaves the ocean until it reaches the plate.

Using state-of-the-art High Pressure Processing (HPP), we remove lobster meat from the shell without cooking it — preserving the natural flavor, texture, and integrity that make Maine lobster the gold standard of seafood. The result: unmatched convenience with the quality and consistency chefs and seafood professionals demand.

Just exceptional Maine lobster.

Supporting the Industry That Supports Us

Sustainability isn’t a buzzword. It’s a responsibility.

100% Certified Maine Lobster

The future of Maine lobster depends on more than responsible harvesting — it depends on creating value throughout the entire supply chain. We’re committed to utilizing more of every lobster and maximizing the value of this incredible resource, returning more value to Maine’s hardworking lobstermen and strengthening the communities that depend on this fishery.

A responsibility to the resource. To the fishermen. And to future generations.

Even today, I still spend time on the water — if you’re going to lead in this business, you should never lose touch with the source.

Building the Most Trusted Name in Seafood

Not the biggest. Not the loudest. The most trusted.

Trust isn’t built through marketing campaigns. It’s built through relationships. It’s built by showing up, being transparent, and doing exactly what you said you were going to do.

That’s the culture we’re building at Shucks. Every member of our team lives by a simple principle:

Say what you do. Do what you say.

Whether we’re working with fishermen, customers, suppliers, or each other — integrity matters. Our word should mean something. In an industry built on relationships, trust is our most valuable asset. And every day, we’re working to earn it.

Our Promise

“Every lobster that leaves our facility carries our reputation with it. That’s a responsibility we take seriously.”
— John Leavitt, Owner & CEO

We promise to source responsibly, process with precision, and deliver products that reflect the very best of Maine. Because great seafood isn’t just about what’s on the plate — it’s about the people who harvest it, the waters it comes from, the trust behind it, and the extraordinary taste that brings it all together.
